Murghob

The Murghob District is situated in the eastern part of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast (GBAO) 3650 meters above sea level and shares a border with the Osh Oblast of the Kyrgyz Republic. The majority of its inhabitants are ethnic Kyrgyz, though they live in peace with the local population. The local population practices both farming and animal husbandry. Here, “Teresken” is considered a special plant and is a one of a variety of shrubs that grow in both Pamir and Murghob. It is used mainly for firewood by the local population but also has another important function in preventing soil erosion. But because of over consumption, the Teresken is on the brink disappearing and is listed in the Red Book of Tajikistan (endangered species). The strong animal Yak lives in the high plateau of Murghob, where the landscape is truly a bit like the surface of the moon. A member of the cow family, the Yak has been domesticated and provides its owners with products primarily for consumption in the home including milk and meat.
